Intranet
According
to peter Auditore, an intranet represents a new way of solving businesses
problems by facilitating efficient
information management, resource sharing and workplace collaboration.
According
to Steve Gillilanda an intranet is a powerful paradigm for sharing information
across the company.
Is
an internal, private website aimed at an organization’s internal staff. based
on internet. Is simply a website within your company networks that only
employees can access. For example a business may create an intranet to allow
employees to securely share message and files with each other. Intranet serves
many different purposes, but their primary objective is to facilitate internal
communication.
Intranet
was born as a response to the organization needs opted to build websites within
the internal network protected by their firewalls. Is also a private version of
the internet, in which organization is responsible to maintain the content
solely for the staff.
Internet website are aimed at the public at
large and intranet is aimed at a controlled set of users. Intranet includes
content and information that is only of use and values for the members of the organization.
The major need for intranet is for security, privacy and controlled access.
Much of the information is private that is intended to use only within an
organization or only by certain staff, when an organization needs to
communicate solely to the staff. Companies use intranet to share a wide range
of information. For example provide new employees with quick access to
information about the company’s structure, policies and operation as well as
training.
One
of the key advantages of an intranet is the broad availability and use of
software applications unique to the needs of corporations.
Extranet
According to Gary C (1993)Refers to the
application and services that are intranet based and use extended, secure
access to external users or enterprises. This access is usually accomplished
through password, user and other application level security. It is an extension
of two or more intranet strategies with a secure interaction between
participant enterprises and their respective intranets.
An
extranet is an extension of the information system of the company to its
partners located outside of the network. It involves some combination of
corporate, public and private intranet using world wide web technology to
facilitate communication with the corporations suppliers, customers and
associates.
An
extranet allows customers, suppliers and business partners to gain limited
access to company’s intranet in order to enhance the speed and efficiency of
their business relationship.
It
can also be an extension of the information system of the company to its
partners located outside of the network. Helps link selected resources of the
intranet of a company with its customers, suppliers, or other business
partners. Here customers access sales and product information, students may access
to their records and assignments.
Extranet
is powerful tool because they let business share resources on their own private
networks over the internet with suppliers, vendors, business partners or
customers. Extranet they are typically used for supporting real- time supply
chains, for enabling business partners to work together.
The
importance of extranet and intranet in corporate communication.
Helps
create mutual relationship with outsiders. Include customers, suppliers, and
distributors through because they will feel loved and cared by the
organization. That, they are part and parcel of organization’s vision and
mission. So it will be easier to manage the activities with held by the
organization.
Easy
access information for example student can access their records and assignments
also customers can access the cost and product information.
Through
intranet and extranet it’s possible to create an information system at a low
cost. Its maintaince and updating with client workstations operating with free
navigators, with real time. All communication activities will be managed and
organized to all external and internal publics. They will have access to whatever
resources they need to see and implement what to do.
Easily
sharing of information: you can easily publish and share information through
web technology. The software can be readily learned and used to develop and
post documents to appropriate locations for ease access and maintaining the
information.
Cost
ineffective: intranet are very cheaper to operate because they use IP protocol
infrastructure. So application development and support are cheaper. If most
people in the organization are familiar with internet software and how to use
it there and trained how to use it will reduce the cost of an organization.
When staff can access information at any time helps corporate officer to manage
all the communicate activities held.
Maintaining
the information: since the information resides in a single location. That is a
small set of defined locations. The information will be accessed to the members
concerned. Through corporate communicate will be able to know what type of
resources are needed in that location.
Easy
monitoring use: nature of the technology allows relatively simple monitoring
use. The system gives staff freedom of moving and has necessary flexibility to
provide connections to the organization networks from any location and at any
moment.
